Adaptive Clothing
What is "adaptive clothing?" Adaptive clothing refers to garments that have been constructed or altered to make life easier for a person with disabilities. Gray Designs can adapt a garment to be one-of-a-kind, a creation as individual and unique as a person's disability. One example follows:
|
Jack is a disabled man who is wheelchair-bound. He searched the market for trousers to accommodate his particular disabilities, but only found "generic" garments that would not serve him. Jack wanted to find good-looking trousers that would hide his leg bag and allow him easy access to it during the workday. Because of diminished strength in his hands, he also wanted the trousers to be free of zippers and buttons. Gray Designs and Jack worked together to create several adaptive trousers that make Jack’s life easier. Here’s what we did . . . |

1) Jack wanted a drawstring at the waist of these ready-made khakis. |
2) Zipper and button closures were replaced by hook-and-loop tape. |
3) An opening was made in the inseam from the crotch down the left leg, closeable with hook-and-loop tape |

4) The bag can be hidden down, deep inside the left leg in a soft, cotton flannel pocket. |
5) This inside-out view of the left leg shows the inner pocket with a small elastic opening at the cuff, for ease of accessing the bag. |
6) Now, don’t these khakis look better than sweatpants? |
